Landscape Architects, Urban Designers and Road Planners will address a broad range of topics on the 2nd April 2014 at the 9th Australian Road Engineering & Maintenance Conference, Melbourne, in a special stream on the Urban Design of Roads, Streets, Paths and Plazas. 

This day (Day 2) can be attended just by itself for those who are interested in the Urban Design, Landscape Architecture and/or Planning of streets and other pavement areas including their environs. Alternatively the last two afternoon sessions of Day 2 can be attended as the AILA Street and Landscape  Seminar .

THE COMMUNITY STREET – TURNING CONVENTIONAL STREETS INTO PEOPLE PLACES
• Case examples of streets that have been rehabilitated and humanised to create places for people and community
• The characteristics that humans look for in public places that attract people and create community.
• Walking friendly streets are the foundation for popular public places and development of community
• The 5C’s – comfortable, connected, convivial, convenient and conspicuous
• Other elements of great community streets including the use of landscape and water sensitive urban design, lighting, public art, furniture and architecture

• This presentation will explore emerging examples of tactical road projects in Australia
including the Dodds Street Reboot, and offer a comparison with international examples including Pavement to Plaza Program in New York City and international Park(ing) Day
• This talk will also outline the benefits and challenges of the tactical approach for local
governments, developers and design professionals, and how they might consider integrating adaptive, flexible and iterative approaches to roadway development
